bikes, mushrooms and quiet.

Hallihallo,

The second month of our stay on Murter has flown by, and honestly, it feels like I’ve been here much longer. November started with fantastic news: we were randomly gifted two bikes! We’ve been using them to ride to Anka, the woman we helped with olive picking. While I sometimes had to worry about Anas’ life on the bike, we enjoyed a lot exploring the island further. It felt like a kid again, driving around on the bikes in the beautiful nature.

Soon, it was time for our journey to Orahovica for our On-Arrival training. After we adjusted to the cooler temperatures, it was nice to be surrounded by other volunteers, sharing our experiences. I particularly enjoyed the actual autumn vibes there, a contrast to what we’ve seen on Murter. Listening to others share their challenges made me appreciate our placement even more. I also learned all the different ways you can incorporate mushrooms into vegetarian meals :))

Nevertheless, the short stay in Zagreb reminded me of how much I miss the city life and being surrounded by other young people. Back on Murter, we did two rowing workshops with middle school children, which turned out to be a fun experience.

Ana and I are doing our best to cope with the slow winter routine. We’ve found our passion in doing sidequests, like baking an amazing Harry Potter birthday cake in celebration of finally finishing our Harry Potter movie marathon, which we started with Juliette back in September. Also, (I don’t know if my friends back home will be too concerned if I’m writing this) we’ve been trying to use the time to improve our geographical knowledge and I started regularly studying Spanish again.

Even though we sometimes feel like we are going a little bit crazy in our current quiet life on Murter, I’m incredibly grateful that we always have each other (and I mean literally always hahaha).
