Time Distortion: Second month in Murter..

Datum objave: 5. December, 2024.

Hello friends!

How’s everything going? Things are great here, although the sun and warm weather have finally left Murter. The last olives are still hanging on the trees while Theresa and I make the most of every ray of sunshine to go out for bike rides. Speaking of bikes, I’m really happy to have relearned how to ride (they say you never forget, but that’s a lie).

These two months have flown by, yet at the same time, it feels like we’ve been here much longer because of all the things we’ve done. It’s an absolute distortion of time. The days feel so long, even though they are so short. Although the past few weeks have been a bit boring due to the weather and not having much to do, I sometimes have that strange feeling on this island that I’m living moments knowing I’ll miss them. Our time here, though it’s long, is limited.

In November, we had one of the best experiences since we arrived, the Arrival Training in Orahovica, where it was really cold. The trip started with some bus problems… we’re not getting along with them… but we finally arrived (late, but we made it). During those days, we learned useful things, but most of all, we met many people and laughed a lot. It was wonderful to share experiences, viewpoints, and similar feelings. By the way, this first weekend of December we’re going to Zagreb to visit some of the volunteers we met. If any of you read this blog, your friends from Murter send you a big hug, we have the sofa ready for you, so come visit us!

I also realized something very useful: Even though Murter is a small place and there aren’t many buses or things to do on weekends, I’m happy to be here and I don’t regret my decision. This would be completely different without someone to complain about it. So, I want to thank Theresa, because it’s not easy being colleagues, roommates, and friends, and I think we’re doing it pretty well.

We’ve already started all the most random hobbies (by the end of winter we’ll probably know all the capitals in each country) and we’ve finished the entire Harry Potter saga. Don’t get me wrong, it’s great having that time for yourself, but sometimes it can be suffocating… It’s kind of a contradiction to feel overwhelmed by not having much to do. We’ll embrace our boredom as best as we can, knowing that we wouldn’t enjoy the good weather without the bad weather, so we’ll patiently wait, looking out of our window for the red leaves to fall and turn green.
