Cutting Carbon – Promoting the biochar method for climate change mitigation

Project Cutting Carbon – Promicanje biochar metode za ublažavanje klimatskih promjena contributes to significant carbon dioxide removal through the sustainable carbonization of organic material. It begins in the Mediterranean region, with the approach expected to be applicable in similar environments, thereby strengthening global efforts to mitigate climate change. Small-scale farming systems become more sustainable and resilient, as biochar opens up new opportunities for soil health, productivity, and income diversification. At the same time, urban ecosystems are improved through greener cities, better water retention, and reduced climate stress, making communities more livable. The project also encourages greater climate awareness and citizen engagement, especially among young people, empowering them to take initiative and act for their future, while strengthening long-term motivation for environmental protection and further collaborative initiatives.

This project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).’

Project objectives

  • Application of the biochar method by farmers, municipalities, local stakeholders and schools using strengthened knowledge, capacity and motivation.
  • Replacing the burning of organic material with sustainable practices.
  • Improving soil and plant resistance to drought.
  • Support for the expansion of urban green spaces.
  • Empowering young generations to actively participate as climate protectors.
