Volunteers from the ISLAND EXTRAVAGANZA 2026 project spent their volunteer hours today at the Colentum archaeological site, where they helped with the maintenance and restoration of the area.
The initiative began with the refurbishment of the benches located near the archaeological site. Volunteers sanded and repainted them so that locals and visitors could enjoy the view of the Roman Colentum ruins and the distant Kornati islands in greater comfort. They also refurbished the sculpture dedicated to volunteers—cleaning, sanding, and refreshing it with a new coat of paint. In doing so, they once again left their mark on a place that, during their stay on Murter, they come to know and experience as a temporary home.
As part of the activities these days, a more creative task follows. Volunteers will come up with and propose a new wall design at the Luka playground, which will give them the opportunity to transfer their ideas and creativity to the space intended for the youngest.
Activities like these offer more than just an opportunity for tangible improvements and restoration; they allow volunteers to discover local history, cultural heritage, and the surrounding environment through hands-on work. Although they come from various parts of Europe, these shared activities bring them together and inspire them to reflect on how each of us can contribute to preserving the places around us. We are particularly pleased that, through ISLAND EXTRAVAGANZA 2026, we can introduce young people from different countries to Murter, its heritage, and its natural beauty. We hope they will take the experiences gained here back home with them and cherish the memories of their time on Murter.
And we continue on - there are still a lot of activities, ideas and volunteer actions ahead of us!
