ISLAND EXTRAVAGANZA 2026: Major contribution across two locations

At the beginning of October, the volunteers of the ISLAND EXTRAVAGANZA 2026 project took part in activities focused on preserving Murter’s cultural and natural heritage.

  1. October 7 and 8 were dedicated to maintaining the Colentum archaeological site, an important part of Murter Island’s cultural and historical heritage. The volunteers worked on improving the surroundings of the site, removing overgrown grass and clearing the paths to make the area tidier, more accessible, and more pleasant for visitors. Through their efforts, they contributed to preserving this valuable site and demonstrated the importance of continuously taking care of places that hold the stories of the island’s past. Activities like these give young people the opportunity to become actively involved in the local community, learn about the cultural heritage of the place where they volunteer, and contribute to its preservation through their work.

On Friday, October 9, the volunteers visited Murterski škoji Primary School, where they took part in an aromatic herb planting activity together with the students. They planted rosemary and immortelle using terra preta, combining practical care for green spaces with learning about sustainable plant-growing methods. The joint planting activity provided an opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences, spend time together, and encourage younger generations to actively participate in environmental protection. Through activities like these, children and young people learn the importance of caring for nature, using resources responsibly, and taking small steps that can help create a more sustainable future.

By maintaining Colentum and planting aromatic herbs with the students, the ISLAND EXTRAVAGANZA 2026 volunteers continued to contribute to the local community through practical and meaningful activities. By bringing together cultural heritage preservation, education, and sustainable practices, they once again demonstrated that volunteering can make a positive impact in many different areas of island life.

A big thank you to all the volunteers, students, teachers, and the school principal for their hard work, cooperation, and enthusiasm! 💚🌿
