Argonauta has launched a new project, “Cutting Carbon,” which aims to share knowledge about carbon farming and promote its application in agriculture.
Biochar is a special type of charcoal produced from biomass, such as wood, plant residues, or pruning, through heating in the absence of oxygen. Its application enriches the soil by retaining water and nutrients, sequestering carbon in the long term, and reducing CO₂ emissions into the atmosphere. Organic waste is used in its production, while simultaneously having a positive effect on plant growth.
As part of the project, Argonauta from the Giacche Verdi Bronte organization, their partners from Sicily, is collecting knowledge on bio-carbon production with the goal of transferring that knowledge to farmers in central Dalmatia and to students in schools in Murter, Tisno, Vodice, Šibenik, and Knin, as well as students of the Mediterranean Agriculture Study Program in Split.
One of the project's first activities was establishing partnerships with elementary schools and the nearby LAGs (More, Mareta, Laura, and Krka), which will involve their students and local farmers and thus contribute to the project's implementation.
Today, March 3rd, a workshop was held for fifth and sixth-grade students at Vjekoslava Kaleb Elementary School in Tisno, where the students learned about all the benefits of using biochar in theory and, together with Argonaut, transplanted two oak saplings; one with biochar and one without. In the coming months, the students will document the growth and progress of both plants and, through a concrete example, see for themselves how biochar, when used, enriches the soil and thereby promotes plant growth.
In the field workshops, on the other hand, farmers will learn how to produce biochar, with the goal of making its application standard practice in agriculture.
During the project, educational webinars will be held, to which professionals and anyone interested in the topic, whether for professional or personal reasons, will be invited. Additionally, a document will be created to consolidate knowledge, experiences, and recommendations, which will be presented to the public.
We would like to highlight the greening and tree-planting initiative at a shopping center parking lot, along with an accompanying social media campaign. Argonauta invites interested retail chains that would like to be part of this project to get in touch!
As with all our projects, we also emphasize the importance of practical actions that make a difference in preserving the environment and shaping a more sustainable society.
This project is part of the European Climate Initiative (EUKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).’
