Moments Like This – The Afters

And just like that, the second month of our volunteering has come to an end. It’s incredible how it feels like both forever and just yesterday that we arrived in Murter. By now, I feel completely settled into island life, enjoying calm weekdays and slow mornings, while keeping the weekends for exploring and discovering new places.

At the beginning of November, we decided to walk all the way to Tisno, about 7 km there and 7 km back, and along the way we visited all the villages on the island: Betina, Tisno, and Jezera. By the end of the day, we had walked nearly 23 km!

During the weekdays, we took the time to explore Murter itself. I was already starting to feel like I knew the streets and could find my way around more easily. We discovered new places and hidden gems throughout November, from stunning sunsets, hidden beaches, and special spots like the “Lover’s Bench” viewpoint and secret swings in the mountains… Each walk felt like a small adventure, filled with nature, amazing views, and those unique moments that only Murter can offer.

We also had some fun urban adventures. One weekend we went shopping in Šibenik, walking from store to store and leaving triumphant with our finds. Later, when our On Arrival Training was postponed, we helped lead workshops for short-term volunteers in Biograd, at Vrana Lake Nature Park. I was nervous at first, since it was my first time leading a workshop, but with the support of Naelys and our Argonauta colleagues, Lucija and Suzana, it went really well. The volunteers, two French, two Germans, and an Irish girl, were amazing, and we even exchanged numbers to meet again before their volunteering ended.

Then came the third weekend, and with it, our adventure to Krka National Park. The autumnal scenery was stunning, with golden leaves covering the ground. We spent the day exploring waterfalls, taking a boat ride to the Visovac Monastery, and ending in the small town of Skradin. There, we had one of the funniest moments of the month: in our tired state, we left our shoes on the windowsill, and three of them fell into the patio below! Luckily, the hostel owner helped us rescue them, turning it into a silly but unforgettable story.

Mid-November brought colder, rainy days, and we took refuge indoors more than usual. But the winter feeling hit us even harder when we decided, together with Áine, Adrien, and Naelys, to spend a weekend in Zagreb. After surviving an 8-hour bus ride, we played in the snow, reunited with friends from a youth exchange, went clubbing, explored the city, and even did some Christmas shopping. Back home, the Christmas spirit stayed with us, and Naelys and I decorated our little house, making a Christmas tree out of a giant branch we found outside.

The month ended with more workshops and Argonauta projects, including one final session with the short-term volunteers we had to say goodbye to. Looking back, November was intense but incredibly rewarding. Discovering Croatia, its people, and meeting new faces made every moment worthwhile.

See you next month… and get ready, because it’s going to be even more amazing!
